Effective hearing - no, definitely not. When you hear yourself, your ear picks up sound waves - sound waves cannot travel through vacuum, at least.

If said space contains a medium - fluid, at least of any kind, then one can hear him/herself.

On a side note, didn't you ever read a book, an article, anything with a voice inside your head? You could "hear" that, but it's not hearing per se.
