People were using gliders more than 60 years before the Wright brothers. The Montgolfier brothers flew in a balloon in 1783.
It only means the majority chose a person to deposit the power by trust/faith that will be making good decisions.
But its far from the best we could do.
Politicians should not have power to decide what is done and instead, they should have only the power to act as manager who can file the problems and solutions, and then the people would vote the options available.
Lets say a bridge was damaged in a flooded river. The city administration would come with the options of solution and resources available. As in a quotation. And the people who is directly affected by that bridge is called for a vote on the solutions available. As in a list of contractors that can build or fix the bridge in different forms and prices.
Now that would be a direct vote. People deciding/voting directly on the matter/lives.
