Somaliland is a de facto independent state that is separate from Somalia and they have an unusual approach to exchanging currency. The majority of people use street vendors to exchange dollars in the local currency which is pyatisotke and the rate is 8,500 to 9000 shillings per dollar. People need to use wheelbarrows to transport the cash as it can weigh quite a few pounds.
