Ben Moser was friends with Mary Lapkowicz in fourth grade and promised her that when they were old enough, he would take her to prom. Ten years later, Mary, who suffers from down syndrome, planned to go to prom with some friends when Ben showed up on her door to keep his decade old promise.
Ben and Mary have had an incredible bond since they first met in second grade. Mary has Down syndrome, but Ben always made sure to include Mary in recess, and once stopped a soccer game to make sure she scored a goal.
“A lot of grade-school aged kids may have stayed away from my sister Mary or thought she was weird because she has Downs Syndrome. But not Ben,” Mary’s brother, Tom, wrote on Facebook.
And during fourth grade, Ben promised that when they were old enough, he would take Mary to her prom.
“I thought Mary was really cool,” Ben told the Patriot-News. “She was sweet and easy to get along with.”
But after going to different high schools, the two drifted apart. When the two schools played each other in football last year, Ben, who is now a quarterback, remembered his promise.
So, he plucked up the courage to ask Mary - and she said yes! Mary, who was originally planning to go with some friends, was understandably ecstatic.
Last week, the two had their dance at Mary’s school, and their fourth-grade teacher even made an appearance.
Mary’s brother wrote that Ben's incredibly thoughtful act “put a smile on Mary’s face & restored my faith in humanity.”
talk about win-win.
