“Before the modern kitchen range or the microwave, the hearth was the warmest place in the kitchen. “Our journey through the American kitchen begins in Williamsburg, the capital of the Virginia Colony for much of the 18th century. The hearth is still paramount, but now features a Yankee invention: the swinging iron crane peeking out from the near wall, which the cook would use to safely position pots such as a Dutch oven. I've lived in a house in which we heated and cooked from the same wood stove. It's not that difficult, and in some ways, it's preferable. I still don't find that 'modern' automatic appliances do a better job of cooking, etc.
I'm reminded of an old Italian saying my father told me just before I was married. It's based on the kitchen stove heats the house and for cooking. Loosely translated. "If there's no fire in the kitchen, the love flies out the window.
