Honey bees are an incredible insect and their honey provides more health benefits than you could imagine. What better way to celebrate National Honey Bee Day than with some random facts about our favorite little black and yellow workers.

 

Honey Bees have 5 eyes. Two large compound eyes and three smaller ocelli eyes in the center of its head.

One queen can lay 1,500 eggs A DAY!

 

A single bee makes 1/12 teaspoon of honey during its entire life. A typical 12-ounce bottle takes 864 bees to make all the honey that goes inside of it.

Bees flap their wings 190 times a second, over double the 70 times a second the hummingbird flaps its wings.

 

Honey bees can fly up to 15 mph.

 

Honey bee hives are heated to 93 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is cold outside, the bees vibrate their bodies to create heat. When it is hot outside, they flap their wings like fans to create a breeze to cool it off.

 

Honey bees NEVER sleep.

 

It takes approximately 1,100 bee stings to be fatal to a healthy adult human.

 

Honey bees are the ONLY insect that produces food for humans to eat.

 

Honey bees are responsible for pollinating approx.. 80% of all vegetables, fruit, and seed crops in the USA.

Technically, they don'r produce honey for us to eat, but for themselves to eat... *gets off high horse* Okay, bees are pretty cool either way. dirol

#9 But a single sting can kill if the person has an anaphylactic reaction to it. There is a theory that bees have evolved their venom to specifically cause anaphylaxis in humans

I got stung on my middle finger once and my whole hand and forearm swelled up so much I couldn't even bend my fingers. I'm not afraid of bees, though, and don't panic when I see one because I understand nature well enough. Wasps and Hornets? Screw them. Those bastards are out to get you.
