When I was a kid we had a black cat on our farm. He was an outdoor cat - he didn't want to be inside - he preferred to roam around our barns and our neighbors barns. He was such a sweet heart to us humans but both of his ears were cut in half from fighting with other cats. Loved that cat.
Black cats are also big amongst sailors, as cats have long been welcome aboard ships to hunt mice, with black cats believed to ensure a safe return home.
