When I was a kid we had a black cat on our farm. He was an outdoor cat - he didn't want to be inside - he preferred to roam around our barns and our neighbors barns. He was such a sweet heart to us humans but both of his ears were cut in half from fighting with other cats. Loved that cat.
Sun exposure can cause some black cats to experience pigment breakdown in their fur, which then becomes a rusty brown and sometimes reveals once-hidden stripes.
