Maybe not sand but perhaps rice hulls or something else that is too soft to hurt the wood. I guess it only works on a really solid piece of lumber, not a hollow core plywood door.
In my area we have a lot of Black walnut trees so we use crushed walnut shells. Also carbonated soda can be used. Sounds odd but my uncle does it for car restoration. Probably not ideal for wood.
Dry ice blaster. Not as abrasive as sand and less mess to clean up afterwards.
