#10 it's because these hold 60 liter bags of household trash. In some areas of the Netherlands, instead of putting the trash bags on the curbside at trash day, we bring them to these underground containers whenever they bags are full. As they are usually near apartment blocks or in city centers where many people live they should be able to contain quite some trash.

It sounds like social benefit services (or socialism, for our USA readers) in action (i.e. taxes well spent), which I am in favor of.

Stephen,That's a social benefit service but it is NOT an example of socialism in the US or anywhere else. Socialism is a system in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that controls the economy.
