The planet's name was a suggestion made by an 11 yr old girl, in reference, of course, to the Roman god of the underworld.
It was also chosen because the first two letters are the initials of the astronomer who discovered Pluto, Percival Lowell.
Pluto the Dog was named only nine months later, as tribute to the newly discovered addition to our solar system.
