Talk to any farmer and they will tell you they depend on cats to keep the mouse/rat and other vermin population in control.
fun fact is thats a myth. cats are effing lazy. dogs are more likely to eliminate the rat problem, hence the name Rat Terrier
Cats rately catch rats because rats fight back. Cats prefer helpless prey like mice, birds and lizards. Having cats can also attract rats if you have cat food accessible at all time.
