They see us as their "pack." All dogs, domestic and wild, are what we call "pack animals." They instinctively need to accept those around them as part of a whole. It's not "love for family," it's "loyalty/dedication to the pack." It's survival.
Yeah, humans do the exact same thing. We call it love for our family and friends.
Either way... I didn't need a "study" to tell me dogs are loyal.
