Don't try and be polite or politically correct about it, people called them "Pin Monkeys". I'm not saying it was ok, just putting the info out there.

Feltie,

Not true. My father in law was one. And it was whomever kids were nearby and bored. Child labor laws didn't exist yet so anyone could be paid a penny for hours of sets. Pin monkey was because they had to climb out of the way fast,.

Dominic,
In southern mississippi they simply called them "Pin Setters". Source: My father was one when he was an adolescent.

Dominic,

The boys howling cartouches of gunpowder on battleships during 18th/19th century were called Powdermonkeys or Powdermaggots.

19. There is no way that works. You would just have a huge U shaped fire.

Cassandra, Per the videos I've seen if built correctly they actually do work as stated. If I remember correctly the key to it is the center log. I think it needs to be split for the flame to work correctly. Easy enough to YouTube.

Cassandra,

Or it would collapse on itself. You would have to keep a close eye on it for sure.

Cassandra,
I'm thinking it would burn slow and generate a lot of smoke and not much heat. It'd be interesting to try though and find out.

Cassandra,

To EVERYONE who doesn't burn wood regularly. YES this works. No, fire doesn't catch on all the logs (physics), smoke issues come from smothering not the shape of the wood (physics), and it will burn for many hours depending on the density of the wood (physics).
