According to royal family representatives, after being placed under medical supervision yesterday, the Queen peacefully passed away in her sleep the same afternoon. She was 96 years old, and she ruled her country for 70 of those years.
Warm sentiments and condolances are already flooding the internet as people from around the world are mourning the loss of Britain’s longest reigning monarch.
Born as Princess Elizabeth of York, she rose to power in 1952 after her father’s death. At the young age of 25, she became queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (known today as Sri Lanka).
Following a 10-day mourning period dubbed Operation London Bridge, Charles, Prince of Wales, will assume the throne as King.
