Remember that when they tell you it's the "hottest day/week/year on record" by 0.5°. Does anyone really believe they could measure temperature to 0.1°F in the late 1800's??
That would equate to an accuracy of 4 or 5 thousandths of a degree, Celsius. Or, to match your question, 0.0072 to 0.009°F.
So yes, I do really believe they could measure temperature in the late 1800's more accurately than you can imagine.
And they did this in thousands of locations across the globe? Including Africa, Antarctica, and South America?
