Red hair happens to be thicker and coarser than other hues. However redheads typically only have around 90,000 strands of hair compared to blondes for instance, who have closer to 150,000 strands on their head.
According to a 2014 study, the highest concentration of redheads in the world is smack dab in the middle of Edinburgh, Scotland. Although it may sound like a silly stereotype, the numbers don’t lie. The study found that 40% of the population residing in southeast Scotland possessed variants of the redhead gene.

In order for red hair to be created, both parents must have a mutated MC1R gene – the pigment control gene. Typically the MC1R gene converts pheomelanin into eumelanin, which is where dark and light hair are created. The mutation allows pheomelanin to remain, which gives hair the red pigment.

No, gingers are not going extinct. This myth has been perpetuated by the idea that those carrying the recessive gene won’t have kids, and therefore the gene will disappear.
That’s highly unlikely as there are more people who carry the gene, than there are actual people with red hair. As we know, red hair typically skips a generation.
