It is normally that way. Whether it is canned, boxed, or frozen, companies make it with minimal seasoning, because their tens of millions of customers all have varying tastes. It has always been up to the consumer to add their own seasoning, spices, and extra ingredients to soup or frozen entrees or whatnot to make it how they enjoy it. Hence the term 'season to taste'. I do not know anyone who eats canned or 'kit' food without adding their own touches first.
