Actually, it appears that you are dumbfounded pretty much on an ongoing basis. ...Get this, children: *amount* applies to quantity; *number* applies to countable items. I taught this to a Chinese woman who spoke no English without a dictionary. What I told her was 'many tears, much water'. She got it the very first time, and never confused it again. And you wonder why literate persons talk to you with no respect.
