“Because the Night” – Patti Smith

“I Will Always Love You” – Whitney Houston

Originally written by Dolly Parton in the 70s, the song was initially to be sung by Elvis Presley. However, Dolly didn’t want to sign over half of her publishing rights, so the song was shelved until Whitney recorded her now iconic version.

This tune was originally offered to Leona Lewis, who was riding a wave of success from her song ‘Bleeding Love.’ She passed on it, and Beyonce swooped right in.

#7 is wrong - Dolly ended up recording the song herself, it became one of her biggest hits. The song hit number 1 on the country charts twice - first in June 1974, then again in October 1982 when she re-recorded the song for the soundtrack to the movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas".
