Can't tell from this angle, but it looks as if he either cut a wedge on both sides of the tree, or cut a wedge into the near side of the tree, maybe after he made a cut in the far side of it. Either way, that's not how it's done. But then, nothing about this is how it's done. He should have dropped a lot more of the tree before trying to take it down. He also should have had a come-along on the near side.
