The Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year is a competition that was first held in 2006. It aims to identify the best freely licensed images from those that during the year have been awarded Featured picture status. Featured picture status means that these images were chosen by the community as some of the finest on Commons.

The winners of this year’s National Geographic Magazine Photo Competition has been announced and the photos, as always, are stunning. This year $10 000 was awarded to Brian Yen for winning the Grand Prize and a trip to the National Geographic headquarters where he will participate in its annual photography seminar. The categories are People, Nature and Places and the captions are written by the photographers themselves.
The magazine Annals of Improbable Research created the Ig Nobel Prize in 1993 and the award is a parody of the original. When you see what people have done to win this prize you will understand why.

The results of the 6th Annual Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year contest have been announced recently. About 600 photographs had been submitted for the contest and here are the pictures that received the most points in the community voting.
I wonder if the Minnesota Lottery is the only lottery that not only takes photos of their winners, but also posts these portraits online with people’s full names and trophies.
