A few years back there was a US sailor who fell overboard at night when getting some fresh air and was not noticed by anyone.
Knowing he could not stay afloat for long he removed his pants, tied the ends of the legs and trapped air in them to make an impromptu floatation device. He kept him afloat for several days until he was rescued. Luckily the water was warm in the tropics when he fell in so he didn't have to worry about hypothermia.
