This series of photos is a project by Carl Kiilsgaard, an American photographer, called The White Family.
The White family lives below the poverty line in a mobile home in eastern Kentucky and Carl Kiilsgaard has been visiting them for three years to document the rural poverty in the region through the eyes of this family.
Carl became an EPF finalist with his project. Some pictures are not easy to see but in all it’s a great work. Here’s what he says about it: “I would like my photographs to ask questions rather than present answers, to unlock emotions, and to be a part of the increasing dialogue in America dealing with social rights of the working and lower class.”

The class divide is a sad thing, but why do they have so many children? It's hard enough to raise one kid when living in poverty, why bring in...how many do they have?

poor = lazy + stupid.
Clean up your damn yard, house, kids. Just because your poor doesn't mean you have to live in filth. If you quit buying cigarettes and beer, you might be able to afford food.

common, one pack of cigarettes is $6.00, that is a plate of food right there, quit smoking and be more clean, no excuse for that

In some areas in the US it seems as though that although people have aspirations they don't necessarily have the tools to be successful available to them.

crownroyalty, that's not even remotely true. look at the immigrants that come with nothing and work hard to make a great living for themselves and family. people like the ones in the photo wasting money on beer/cigarettes and not cleaning are only looking for a handout. it looks as if they don't send the kids to school and that's a damn shame.

My Grandma used to tell me she grew up very poor and couldn't afford a mop so she used a stick to drag around an old rag and that's how she cleaned her floors. NO EXCUSE for being filthy people all around.

They can afford pop, cigarettes, pets, and some people in the family are overweight. They are not responsible parents! The damn kids are smoking cigarettes and litter. They can recycle those pop cans they are throwing in the woods. They are slobs.
I have no sympathy whatsoever!

That little girl in the brown top and blue shorts will probably rely on how you men ogle her for her self worth and maybe even for future income. #2, 5 and 7 should go to another website to look for kiddie-porn. That girl is a victim of her parents who allow her to wear too much makeup, but she is also a victim of you men, who think it's ok to sexualize a twelve year old.

How do you know they are grown men? They could be teenagers themselves.

Maybe we should just cut everyone off. All this money we spend on social programs ultimately keeps the people that its suposed to help from ever getting out of the hole they are in. What has happened to personal responsibility? We need to get back to the principles that founded this country. I say to the hell with them, I have my family and the freedom and liberty to make it or suffer. I choose to make it and do it on my own. I know I sound heartless to the it takes a community crowd but ask yourself this what has all the social programs really done to the less fortunate. If I were in charge I would say if your hungry go to church they can give you a sandwich.

Thanks, 17#, for stating the obvious. Those who see 'hotness' in a 12 years old girl worry me the most (as does those who cannot tell the difference between your and you're)

They need to clean up the filth, quit breeding and learn how to budget their welfare cheques. Those kids don't stand a chance.

I grew up very poor. There was rarely food in our home. I can remmember eating sugar sandwichs because that was what there was to eat. I either had two pairs of pants and three shirts or three pairs of pants and two shirts. I never owned a pair of matching socks till I was eighteen years old. I started framing houses when i was twelve years old. I would hitch hike to work. No one ever gave me a dame thing and for those who say there is no work out there just haven,t been hungry enough. I educated myself, We give money those who are less fortunate and that is what we should do for a short time, A helping hand yes I agree, But to continue to feed ignorance makes idiots out of us. Cut these people off and make them work.
