no it's not an actual fit. If you do it yourself, graphically or on paper, there will be some residual area, whose area is 1sq.

Basically the second figure has a gap in between the shapes whose area is 1sq. Hence 65-1=64

no, it doesn't. I didn't try to work out the maths yet, but I'm sure there's no such gap.

Try it on paper, see if your theory survives and if it does not then let's come up with another explanation.

It does not fit. Just look at the diagonal line.

Actually first poster is right. The diagonal line between red and green falls 3 squares in the length of 8 sqaures while the line between blue and orange falls 2 squares in the length of 5.
Now since 3/8 does not equal 2/5 there is not a straight line when the pieces are reassembled in the second manner. There is in fact a small gap equalling 1 square.

If you don't believe that, this trick is possible thanks to the fibonacci series 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21.. and so on. It gets even harder to see when done in a larger format for instance 13 by 13 or 21 by 21.
