Ady Gil vs. Whalers (16 pics)

Illegal whaling is a fairly serious problem today.
To fight these "pirates" is difficult, because their vessels are fast enough and equipped with radars.
But now, with the appearing of the trimaran Ady Gil, which design allows the wave-piercing, and the speed of about 45 knots, the chances of whalers will highly decrease. It is said that the vessel will be able to physically block Japanese harpoon ships.
Well, let's see the pictures of this unusual vessel.

Nice boat. Too bad taking into account the level of skill within the Sea Shepards they'll probably wreck fast.

Oh, and the whalers Sea Shepards are going after? They aren't doing anything illegal. Their whaling is permitted in the international rules, though I do find it immoral. The japanese are claiming they are whaling for research porposes though the meat ends up in japanese kitchens. But it is technicly legal.

Farewell to the Ady Gil (Earthrace) one of the most amazing boats ever built!
I won't be surprised if they build another one and hope they do!

The crew of the Ady Gil knew what they were getting into. They had to expect that anything was possible in the dangerous game of hunting, harassing and hindering the Japanese whaling fleet, who under the guise of "research" have an annual kill quota of ~1,000 whales. Who ever heard of a cetacean biologist killing even one of these grandest of creatures? Flouting the law in the name of pure and unadulterated greed, the perpetrators of such cruel and irresponsible acts are truly the ecoterrorists.

God speed Sea Shepherd! mr47_04

The Ady Gil incident makes me want to volunteer for the Sea Shepards - go Greenpeace! So far I can only give money but actually volunteering for them should feel very rewarding! mr47_04

..a boys 'batman' dream come through - sadly though the outcome is neither particularly nice nor super-innovative. there are video bits about suggesting that even at lower speeds the ride in her is a rather bumpy one. :)
it may be notable that the most recent 'sail around the world' record took 12 days less (48) than the 'motor around' one of this boat. so much for speed advantage.
as for using carbon fibre boats in a confrontation with japanese steel ships - it is a rather silly idea, isn't it. this isn't the way to go. communication is needed. ..political adjustments to existing quota. japanese people are open to change - especially since fukushima.
