This underground house situated in Vals, Switzerland, offers a stunning view of the mountains around. The house is buried almost completely into one side of a hill but it has an oblique opening for light to better come into it. In fact, all of the rooms wrap around the interior courtyard. It must be cool to live there and have this beautiful view each day… ))
Underground homes are not new. The average temperature inside is about 53 deg.F year round. That makes it much easier to heat even when the temp is well below zero outside. A/C is free in hot weather. Water proofing is very important. You never have to paint the outside of the house. You can be very creative with the entry (your only source for light unless you want to use mirrors to simulate windows to the surface) Don't sell this one short. It's a very good idea. I've seen some with circular glass walled central atriums with gardens and skylights; very beautiful designs.
