here in malaysia we have a simmilar saying. "berpantas maut sebelum ajal" which roughly translate to "don't give up on your life until it is your time to go"

Klaajs> That's actually an old french idiom which was originally "il ne faut marchander la peau de l'ours devant que la beste soit morte" and it's "killing" not "shooting" the bear because you have to make sure that it is dead before you sell its skin.
