I bet you have fond memories of Big Bird, Oscar the grouch, Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster or some other popular Sesame Street character from your childhood. It was today in 1969 that the brainchild of Joan Cooney aired for the first time.
Joan’s main goal was to help underprivileged children 3-5 to prepare for kindergarten. Since its inception it has been viewed in over 120 different countries around the world.
Sesame Street has evolved with the times including a new puppet named Kami who was introduced in 2002 to the Takalani Sesame program. This puppet has HIV and it helps to show children living with this epidemic in their country ways to deal with it. In 2006 a female Muppet named Abby Cadabby was added as a role model for girls.
Learn Something: Over 74 million Americans have watched Sesame Street and over 8 million tune in each week in the United States alone.
