Looks like its either testing of a new hull design or the company showing off its designs ability to float were it to take heavy damage while underway. Ships are designed to have water tight compartments so that in the event of heavy damage or catastrophic failure it will still float so long as the compartment doors are sealed up. Had the titanic been built properly and its compartment doors sealed it would have survived despite the manufacturing flaw with the steel hull.
