These are some modern day gypsies. It all began in 1986 when some punk rockers from London decided to protest the policies of Margaret Thatcher, left London to live in the countryside and eventually turned into quite a big community. They travel around the countryside by carriage, professing the ideas of freedom from the “evils of the modern world”, self-sufficiency and anarchism.

they give a bad name to people that really want to make a difference
none of what you say makes much sense to me. these people are living intentionally, so they are hardly outcasts. their consumption of natural resources is obviously very low, and they're clearly recycling and pre-cycling many materials, so i don't think it's fair in any way to call them hypocrites. and how can you possibly say they give a bad name to people who want to make a difference?
very few people live (if any) live completely self-sufficiently. these people are already ahead of 99.9% of the rest, and if you were living this same low-maintenance, outdoor lifestyle i'm quite sure you would tend to look a bit scruffy and worn around the edges over time- that's just reality.
These folks are English gypsies, who have opted for an alternate lifestyle. The 'real' ones, the 'Roms', are not to be trusted as they are hard core criminals.
