time lapse is probably around 10 billion years or less if i had to guess. and pretty much all galaxies are "disks" AFAIK... that's simply the way they tend to form due to the known (and observed) forces of nature. although, yes, variations in their disks is how we tend to classify galaxies.

regardless, awesome graphic! that's pretty much exactly what happened with the milky way... showing that we're not done absorbing globular clusters or crashing in to neighboring galaxies. although mostly it's not a "crash," but a massive gravitational and particle-based rearrangement.

anyway, our sister galaxy andromeda is pretty much the next major thing we crash in to. so get ready... brace yourself! :D
