In this 1886 photograph, taken before the game against the New York Giants, Boston pitcher, Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn, is snapped showing us “the finger”.

I don't think so. Charlie Radbourn was known for his famous pitch, the 'Hook ball'. He was wounded in the Civil War when a mine blew up in front of him and peppered his body with shrapnel. His hand was mangled and never healed correctly and a couple of his fingers were permanently curled and the center finger was locked straight, so I think that's what you are seeing in this photo.
If you look at other photos of him, you'll see the same thing.
