5 years after the Olympic Games, these stadiums are only a shadow of what they used to be with many standing empty and long abandoned.

This is why I don't like the Olympic games. First you crawls and creeps before the overpaid dudes in the IOC. Then you spend epic amount of resources and money on the build of arenas and infrastructure by blowing the budget to the moon and back. Then there's the big party that spans over 2-3 weeks, which for many cities ends with years of hangover. The IOC takes the profit, while the host take the loss, that's the rule. In many cases, the arenas built are too large for the local need after the games, and that is such a waste. There are exceptions though, Barcelona 1992 and Lillehammer 1994 are examples of that. The Olympic games have grown too big and expensive IMHO.
Never underestimate the power of large crowds, of stupid people.

Don't forget the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Anyway, the Olympics could do without useless sports (not in and of themselves but just as Olympic events) like BMX, those ball and ribbon routines, etc. and just stick with the original sports that the Greeks had. Morphing it into what it is becoming is making a mockery of it all.
