The utilidors(tunnels) aren't only for costume characters. They are for anyone that has to get to a curtain land because it doesn't go with the show. It does help the character tho and at Epcot there's a small one
The brass "golden spike" survey marker monument is located just inside Sleeping Beauty Castle and look for a more recent "Walt's Footprint" nearby. It has never been the absolute center of Disneyland being too far NorthWest for that, but it is the figurative origin for survey purposes. The physical center of the guest area has changed many times, such as with the addition of Toontown.
