This is Sanmenxia city in Henan, China and it is remarkable. The houses here are built underground or more precisely, they are carved into loess silt land pits. There are nearly 10,000 of such homes in Sanmenxia.
These dwellings were built to be earthquake-resistant, sound-proof and they are even energy-efficient. Above all, there are wide wells that prevent floods and storms to ensure safety.
