Tara Wood's daughter Norah, 4, saw an elderly man in a supermarket and stopped to talk to him while she was buying cupcakes for her birthday. “Hi old person, it's my birthday,” said Norah. Then she asked her mom to take a picture of her and Mr. Dan, the elderly man she just met. The two had a short but lively conversation. Tara then posted the picture on her Facebook page and some of her friends recognized Mr. Dan and told her that his wife had died in March and the moment he spend with her daughter talking in a supermarket was the happiest he'd been since. A couple of days later, Tara called him and took him for lunch with Norah. The two became close.
"We spent three hours with him that first that day. They acted like they had known each other their whole lives," said Wood. She also said that it couldn’t just end here. Now Norah sees Mr. Dan once a week and calls him on the phone.
Tara added, "She cares deeply about him and his well-being and that's something I couldn't teach."
Before Norah came into his life, Mr. Dan recalls never being able to sleep after he suffered the loss of his wife. When he met Norah and Tara, all of that changed. The kind little girl and her mom now pay their new friend weekly visits, and have even invited him to spend Thanksgiving with them this year.
