What an Expensive and Ancient Bottle of Wine Actually Tastes Like (10 pics)

This bottle of wine was found on board a ship that has sunk in 1864 during the American Civil War. The wine, which is a collector’s item for the wealthy elite, was recently opened for a tasting at the festival of food in South Carolina and it was not what you would expect.

When sommeliers poured the wine it came out of the bottle as a light grey liquid, which they described as smelling like a mix of turpentine oil and sulphur, with a taste of gasoline, raw crabs and light citrus notes. However, when you are a collector of fine wine you do take gambles like this one and unfortunately you don’t always win the lottery and might end up with a bottle that tastes disgusting.

i doubt they really expected it to taste much different. wine must be stored at controlled conditions to remain potable.
