In fact, I once saw a mother-in-law make a nasty dig about her new son-in-law. In front of everyone. The wife was normally a super nice, calm person. But she went right over to the old bat and said if she ever attacked her husband like that again she would never be invited back to their home and never see her future grandchildren.
