“Left my backpack (containing a laptop and important work) on a subway in NYC, chased a train through New York, and a stranger returned the backpack to my apartment from clues inside the bag.”

Bonus: stories from Internet users about how pleasant honesty can be
"Once, as I was getting out of my car on a winter evening in −22°F weather, I saw a glove in the snow. I picked it up and brought it to the concierge. It turned out that the glove was mine. It has been there for 3 days."

"Once, I was buying veggies and fruits from a street seller. I got quite a lot of them. The seller calculated everything, I took the bags, and left. After having taken about 5 steps, I turned around and asked the seller, “Why are you not saying to me that I haven’t paid you?” She replied, “I got confused.” I returned and paid for the purchase."

"When I was in Turkey, the bank exchanged my US dollars for the same rate as the euro. I noticed it and returned but they said that everything was correct. I stood there for a while and left the extra money together with the receipt and left. Several seconds later, one of their employees caught up with me and thanked me for it. The good thing is that the difference wasn’t that big."

In most parts of Denmark the "culture enrichers" will pick that stall clean of produce and money. So it's a dying thing here due to influence from the very south :-(

#16 I don't mean to spoil your fun, but it reads "field and cashbox are under surveillance".

Germans don't joke around. If someone volunteers on a regular basis, we call it "Ehrenamt" – honorable office. No laughing matter. Move along.

Justina,

i wouldn't go so far as to translate this to 'under surveilance'.. that implies to me that there's a camera on it. (it would translate to overwatch, but that doesn't make sense in this context:) i'd say "are checked"

the thing is: if you mess with an honesty box, the owner will eventually take it away. It works because the people make it work. it takes just one mofo to foul it up.

In the netherlands, around me in a circle of about 10km that is, I see a lot of these: eggs, tomatoes, strawberries, pumpkins, mushrooms, books, milk, etc.

yeah, the world isn't bad, there's just a few [email protected]#ks that spoil it.

Never willingly volunteer anything you don't mind seeing lost, stolen or ruined. Far too many people today have no concept of conscience or self control.

Not now, but in the past, I've lived in places that you couldn't do the "honesty box" thing. They would take everything you have AND the honesty box!!! 35
