They needed to get rid of an USA-backed monarch, Reza Pahlavi. The most radical opposition, in this case the islamists, managed to take control. The dictator was installed and supported by the US to create a local power against the sowjets. Once again a cold war f@#k up.

Yes, no doubt. I just wanted to point out, that the US interventions produced a lot of dictatorships. Mostly right wing in south america, religious in this case. Even the communist vietnam is a direct result of those interventions. Some of those might have had a brighter future without interventions.
