Its not about the Walkman. Its about the tape not losing its magnetic information.
You could replace the tape with a new copy with technology around you. I presume it was about the nostalgia and the sound from the device. You would not loose that with a new tape or walkman.
he also had a tape player built into the ship so it would make sense they can replicate and maintain the tape if needed.
