They are used in areas, where you have to spent money/energy for cooling and sun protection.
There are other panels, that look like tinted glass, they gain also electricity from the human visible parts of the light.
Don't disregard technology just because it isn't perfect at first. If everyone did that we'd still be living in caves banging rocks together for entertainment.
