Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. The observation platform, located in the crown of the Statue of Liberty was closed to visitors since September 11, 2001.
This platform will be reopened for visitors on Fourth of July this year. In the meantime, a small group of journalists was allowed to go and have a little peek.
