The bookstore is built within the almost century-old Grand Splendid Theatre, which opened in 1919. Since then the place has undergone a few transformations. At some point, it was converted into a movie theater, and in 2000, it was converted into the El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore. In 2008, El Ateneo Grand Splendid was named the second most beautiful bookstores in the world by The Guardian.
