It has been 50 years since Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth, and therefore it is necessary to celebrate with these stunning pictures. Regardless of if a photo was taken decades ago our planet is still just as beautiful.

Google earth is a very effective tool if used right but this is one feature the Bahrain government would gladly do without. The government blocked Google Earth when it discovered that the oppressed Shiite majority where using the tool to view palaces and other estates that make up 95% of the country. The controversial images captured in an anonymously distributed PDF file caused uproar and fed the current mass revolt happening in the country.
We already posted beautiful photos taken by Colonel Douglas H. Wheelock which appeared on his Twitter account. It seems that other astronauts follow his example. Here’s another set of pictures made this time by astronaut Paolo Nespoli while he was aboard the space station. The photo was taken approximately 1,000 km northeast of the Solomon Islands.
If you look at Earth from space, you’ll be amazed at how beautiful it is. And if you apply false color to the photos created by satellite sensors, you’ll get a stunning artistic result.

This project named ‘Piece together for peace’ is simply brilliant.
It’s in fact a Chinese calendar where each month is represented by an animal created by using the continents and isles of the Earth. As you may have already guessed, those are the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac.
And as a bonus, there’s also a flash animation at the end that recaptures the 12 pictures and shows how the continents and isles are taken and moved to form the animals.
