Apparently during the ‘50s men were participating in all kinds of heroic activities, including saving women from various creatures and fighting off dangerous animals. Pulp fiction magazines were all the rage during that decade.
It is rather interesting to see what passed for or was considered beautiful in Japan in the old days. Oh well, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

December 7, 1941 the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked US military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii without warning. Following the attack, Japan officially declared war on the US. This was immediately followed by the war message from President Roosevelt who then and signed a formal declaration of war against Japan.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is showing off these fantastically stylish high heels by Steven Arpad from the end of the 30s. Some of these styles could be making a comeback.
Taken by Horace Warner in 1912 in Spitalfields England, these images of poverty stricken children show the horrible existences they had to endure just to survive.
Magnum member Leonard Freed is best known for these black & white documentary photographs. He travelled to different countries as a photojournalist, but his career blossomed during the American Civil Rights movement in 1964-1965. You’ll find some of his best retro photos after the jump.
Even though color photography wasn’t made widely available to the public until the 60s you can now see color images from as early as the turn of the century. It’s amazing to see that life wasn’t in black and white during those times.

This is a truly classic collection of real photos from a Kansas City Taco Bell, taken by a person who worked there during that time. Taco Bells have changed dramatically since then, and definitely not for the better. Check out the Spanish tile counters and wood grain Formica paneling, sweet!
Believe it or not these people submitted these actual photos for consideration as a TV weather forecaster. Some of their facial expressions look as if someone had put them up to it. Unfortunately some of these haircuts might be making a comeback, but lets hope some of the clothes stay on the rack.
