Suppressors are most efficient for small calibre weapons, and in particular when used together with sub-sonic ammunition. A .22 with subsonic ammo and a suppressor is silent, its defining sound being the mechanism itself. Also, on close range the sound of the bullet hitting can be quite noisy, like a deep "thud". But shooting vermin with a silenced .22 can be virtually silent if done right.

Yes, video games and movies always get the sound of a silenced weapon wrong.
This video is a bit much though, trying to silence one of the loudest guns.
