This place looks like heaven. It is the Blue Lagoon located in the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland. It’s the world’s only point where a deep sea ridge is coming onto the shore. The Blue Lagoon is an amazing geothermal spa that attracts millions of tourists from all over the world.

Iceland's most active volcano, Grimsvotn, began erupting. A cloud of smoke has risen 19 km into the sky from the volcano in a few seconds.

Last year it was the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull that disturbed the whole world, and this year it’s the turn of Brimsvotn. Iceland, what’s next?

These are the Northern Lights of the Aurora Borealis over Iceland. They are growing in size and intensity and are expected to reach a spectacular peak in 2012. These photos were taken by Icelandic photographer Orvar Thorgiersson.

Millions of passengers can’t get home because all Asia-Europe flights are stopped – governments are afraid of the fallout from the ash cloud drifting from the erupting Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Dormant for two centuries, a volcano erupted in southern Iceland in March. It ripped a 1 km-long fissure in a field of ice shooting out lava a hundred meters high. The last time the volcano erupted was in 1821.

Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Iceland. It is located in the south-east of the island, covering more than 8% of the country. With a size of 8,100 km², it is the largest glacier in Europe in volume (3,100 km³) and the second largest in area. The average thickness of the ice is 400 m, with a maximum thickness of 1,000 m. Under the glacier, as under many of the glaciers of Iceland, there are several volcanoes.
