France’s First Lady Carla Bruni (right) is one of the most elegant women in politics. A few days ago she met with her decent rival: Princess Letizia of Spain (left). Both women chose an elegant and restrained style, which was practically identical. Miss Bruni chose a conservative Christian Dior blue dress with signature low-heel shoes from Christian Louboutin and Princess Letizia appeared in a purple dress by Spanish designer Felipe Varela. Suddenly, it was Paris versus Madrid. This is the first know photo of a human being. It is a Daguerreotype that was taken in 1838 in the Boulevard du Temple in Paris by the inventor of the process Louis Daguerre. This process involved exposing a chemically treated metal plate for 10 minutes. There were other people and carriages in the photo but because they were moving, they didn’t show up.

During the turn of the century thrill seeking and being a daredevil was both exciting and profitable.  The latest thing was trying to ride over Niagara Falls in a barrel!  Taking the plunge was a 50/50 chance at life and death.  After hoaxes and Victorian shenanigans, the falls were finally tamed for the first time…by a woman!
